The Clean Label Project’s study of leading collagen supplements found that 64% tested positive for measurable levels of arsenic, 37% tested positive for measurable levels of lead, and 34% tested positive for trace levels of mercury. Yikes!
Some companies test but their sites say “levels fall beneath the acceptable level” allowed by the government. But if you know you and know – we do not want ANY heavy metals in our food, especially in products we use daily.
The government allows a very small amount of metals to be present, 0.1. This seems insignificant until you think about using it daily or even multiple serving a day. The metals can add up and have health consequences.

Legally the cadmium, arsenic, lead and mercury limits just have to fall within legal limits but they do not have to be zero.
If a product has levels close to those legal limits, and you are consuming it daily, that can still be enough to accumulate and cause health issues. Companies sourcing raw materials well, while they may have negligible amounts occasionally, should not be anywhere near the legal limits.
doTERRA, of course, will never sell collagen that doesn’t pass its strict standards and testing processes.
Beware of added sugars in collagen
If you limit sugar in your diet, eat keto or are diabetic you need to be extra aware of the sugar content in your collagen. BUT because sugar increases inflammation in the body and decreases immune function, everyone should be aware and choose a collagen without added sugar.
